The Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren provides information and support for the over 30,000 grandparents taking care of their grandchildren in Massachusetts.

The Commission conducted a listening tour in 2009 setting up meetings across the state to get input from grandparents on the challenges they face as they take care of their grandchildren. Soon after, the commission issued a report that detailed the greatest needs facing grandparents. The commission then created a website with a resource guide that provides helpful information for these grandparents. The guide provides information on how to get legal help, how to navigate different public support systems such as child care, welfare, health and insurance, disability services, and mental health services. The website updates current events and provides information on support groups throughout the state.

Besides the resource guide, the commission also issued a one page fact sheet that provides information on involvement with the Department of Children and Families (DCF), the child welfare agency in Massachusetts. Sometimes, children are removed from their home by DCF and placed with kin (often grandparents). When this happens, DCF has certain requirements that grandparents must meet. The fact sheet explains the process of working with DCF and what grandparents can expect when DCF is involved with their grandchildren.
