Funding for this program was eliminated in February 2015 by a 9C cut to the FY 2015 Budget. The STEM Teacher Corps is an initiative of the Executive Office of Education, aimed at increasing the number of highly qualified STEM teachers (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in Massachusetts schools. The initiative involves having exemplary STEM teachers work together through the Teacher Corps to formulate plans to develop, recruit, and retain new STEM educators.

First funded in FY 2015, the program was designed to launch with a cohort of 50 teachers identified through a selective application process. State funding will only be used if the funding is also matched three to one by private funding from corporations and philanthropic organizations. The launch of the program and the fundraising push was postponed pending leadership transitions related to the 2014 election.

The STEM Teacher Corps is designed to help create mentoring and professional development programs that aim to increase the number of highly qualified STEM teachers in Massachusetts public schools. Although the main purpose of the STEM Teacher Corps is to develop new science educators across the state, individual corps members who are currently in the classroom could gain a professional development opportunity, while promoting statewide expertise and leadership among STEM teachers.

This Teacher Corps is part of the Commonwealth's overall STEM plan. This plan supports and coordinates existing efforts by workforce and industry groups, K-12 schools, community colleges, and state universities to strengthen the state’s STEM pipeline from academics through career development. The state STEM plan includes themes and goals focused on building and supporting an effective workforce of STEM educators.
