Homeless Student Transportation helps defray the local costs of providing transportation for homeless students who once lived within a given school district but temporarily reside elsewhere.

Federal law provides that homeless students living in temporary housing outside of a city or town where the family lived prior to becoming homeless may choose to remain enrolled in the school district of origin. The federal law requires that transportation be provided so that students can continue attending the school district of origin. This program helps reimburse host and sending school districts for these transportation-related costs.

The Governor's FY 2015 budget proposal shifts funding for Homeless Student Transportation into a new line item (to 7035-0008 from 7035-0005), and proposes level funding of $7.4 million.
